School Based Mentoring Programs
High School Bigs Program
This program matches local High School students with elementary and middle school children. The mentoring-tutoring is done at the child’s school site. Site managers closely supervise and provide assistance for the matches. The commitment is one hour a week for one academic year, with visits that may take place after school, at lunch, or at any point during the day. These students learn to become caring adults while at the same time providing a positive role model for younger children in their community.
School-Based Mentoring with Adults
How does it work? You meet with your Little Brother or Sister in their school once a week at a specified site and time. You will enjoy ongoing activities, guest speakers with discussions, games and art projects. Of course, we provide a healthy snack.
You will have a Big Brothers Big Sisters staff member to provide training and to support and ensure a positive experience for both you and the child.
Please consider volunteering one to two hours of your time once a week. You do not need any special or trained skills just bring your smile and compassion, and you will be ready to make a difference.
School-based Big Brothers and Big Sisters must:
- be at least 18 years old
- live or work in Monmouth or Middlesex County
- be able to make a commitment to share an activity with their “Little” once a week or every other week for at least one school year
- not be using illegal drugs and cannot have convictions of any kind, including DWI, for one year prior to application. Any earlier criminal history is of concern and investigated.
- agree to work within the organization guidelines and follow our rules and guidelines
- be willing to complete the intake process which includes completing an application, listing three references, DMV check, criminal history check, fingerprinting, pre-match training and office interview.
