One-to-One Mentoring

A mentoring relationship between an adult and a child. The Big Brother or Big Sister picks up the child at his/her home and shares an activity with the child.

We ask for a commitment of a few hours in one day together weekly or bi-weekly for a minimum of one year. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, live in Monmouth County and have a valid New Jersey driver’s license. There are no financial obligations or requirements. Part of the intake process includes a criminal and DMV background check.

The children live in Monmouth County, are between the ages of 6 and 14, primarily live in a one-parent home and are in need of a positive adult role model and friend.

Couples Mentoring

This mentoring relationship is similar to the one-to-one relationship. However, this matches a Little Brother with a married couple. The couple picks the child up at his home and shares an activity with the child.

We ask for a commitment of a few hours in one day together weekly or bi-weekly for a minimum of one year. The couple has the option to see the child together or, on occasion, one adult might meet with the child.

Corporate-based Mentoring

Any Monmouth County corporations interested in working with BBBS in some sort of mentoring/volunteer capacity should contact our office at 732-544-2224 and ask for Lewis Lokitz, Chief Executive Officer, extension 329, or send him an email at llokitz@bbbsmonmouth.org.

School-Based Mentoring

Adults are placed in a one-to-one match with a student, meeting at the child's school for one hour a week throughout the school year.  Participation in agency sponsored summer programs is optional.  Currently, we have a program at the Bolger School in Keansburg; programs that are pending include the Hope Charter Academy, Eatontown School District and Asbury Park Middle School. You may contact Christine Boylan for information.

Kids' Club

The Kids' Club is the first level of involvement after they are interviewed and enrolled into Big Brothers Big Sisters. Each child receives a membership card and our activity mailings. We recruit and screen adult volunteers to provide transportation and supervision for these children to participate in our agency sponsored activities for our Kids' Club Members. It's like being a Big Brother or Big Sister for a day. There is about one activity held each month and all events are staff supervised. You do not have to go to all the activities, just as many as you're able to.

Volunteers apply and are interviewed. Volunteers must be 19 years old and we ask for a six-month commitment.

Fundraising

We have several fundraising events during the year which require many volunteer hours to run successfully, such as:

Bowl For Kids' Sake     Gourmet Food & Wine      Annual Gala         Volleyball
